Church of St. Catherine

"Before St. Catherine's Church was constructed, the site was home to a 14th-century Dominican church. In the early 17th century, the Jesuits, arriving in Zagreb, found the existing church too dilapidated and inadequate. They began the construction of a new church in 1620, which was completed by 1632. Alongside the church, they built a monastery, though this site now hosts the Klovićevi dvori art gallery. St. Catherine's Church suffered significant damage from fires in 1645 and 1674, which ravaged its interior. Wealthy Croatian nobles contributed to its restoration, gaining the privilege to display their family coats-of-arms or to be buried within the church as a mark of their contribution. Following the disbandment of the Jesuits in 1793, St. Catherine's became part of the parish of St. Mark's. It has been a Collegiate church since 1874. The church faced severe damage from the 1880 earthquake but was repaired and reconsecrated in November 1881, after six months of restoration work."
