Grand Bur Dubai Masjid

"The Grand Mosque, known in Arabic as مسجد دبي الكبير, is a prominent religious site in Dubai, situated strategically between the textile souk and the Dubai Museum, near a small stream in the Bur Dubai area. Initially constructed in 1900 as a kuttab, or Qur'an school, the mosque was designed to educate students in the recitation of the Qur'an. Over the years, it has undergone several reconstructions, with the original building being replaced in 1960 and then rebuilt again in 1998. The present structure can accommodate up to 1,200 worshippers and serves as a vital center for Dubai's religious and cultural activities. Architecturally, the Grand Mosque features a striking 70-meter (230 ft) minaret, the tallest in Dubai, which is reminiscent of a lighthouse. The mosque's sandy-grey walls are relatively unembellished, but a large Quranic inscription above the five columns of the entrance adds a decorative element. The roof is adorned with 45 small domes and nine larger ones, complementing the tall minaret, while the wooden windows showcase handmade stained glass that harmonizes with the surrounding architecture of Bur Dubai. The mosque is constructed in an Anatolian architectural style, enhancing its visual significance in the old city. Visitors are welcome to explore the mosque, with free tours available for non-Muslims from Sunday to Thursday between 9 AM and 11:30 AM, although conservative dress is recommended.
