James Blick
"If you’re looking up the Cava de San Miguel, along the right hand side are a series of mesones, built into the side of the wall. These old bars used to be storerooms beneath the Plaza Mayor, but sometime in the mid 20th century were converted to rustic taverns serving down-home food (aka mesones). They’re all atmospheric, but most aren’t any good. Apart from El Mesón del Champiñón, which is excellent. Started in the 60s by the current owner Francisco’s uncle, these guys specialize in one thing – delicious little button mushrooms done on the grill. Sidle up to the bar, order a ración, and enjoy watching the grill guy (often a big chap called Wellington) cooking mushroom after mushroom after mushroom. And enjoy the kitschy decor, and the man sometimes playing bad showtunes on the keyboard in the dining room. Unique is the word!"
"Also serves tapas however well known for it's mushrooms a cute small restaurant to visit. "
