Romanian Academy

"The Romanian Academy was founded in April 1866 under the name of the Romanian Literary Society, a year later receiving the name of the Romanian Academic Society. The institution was "national, encyclopedic and active", according to the description on the website of the Romanian Academy, and the 21 founding members were important personalities from Moldova, Wallachia, Transylvania, Banat, Bessarabia, Bucovina, Maramureș, but also from the Peninsula Balkan. Among the founding members we mention Vasile Alecsandri, Ion Heliade Rădulescu, George Baritiu, Alexandru Hașdeu, Alexandru Hurmuzaki, Vicentiu Babeș, Dimitrie Cozacovici, Costache Negruzzi. In 1879 it became a national institute and was named the Romanian Academy. During the communist regime, the Academy was nationalized, and 98 members were expelled from the institute, as well as a number of researchers. During the same period, part of the collections of documents, works of art and archaeological objects were reallocated to other institutions, but after 1989, only part of them were recovered. Since 1990, the Romanian Academy returned to its original functionality and continued its activity as a science and culture forum of Romania. The headquarters of the Romanian Academy is located on Calea Victoriei at number 125 and is surrounded by a park. The buildings within the Academy belonged to the Filipescu, Slătineanu, Belu, Zaleski families, and the library was built in the period 1936-1937 under the guidance of the architect Duiliu Marcu. The main building is located in the northern part of the park and is a symmetrical, imposing construction. In 2004, the building of the Romanian Academy was declared a historical monument."
