"Cascade Creek Historic Camp is a gorgeous DOC campsite along Cascade Creek with a huge field of lupins. This was the most beautiful campsite we found during our roadtrip. While the site is not park wherever you want, there are designated sites that you can pick from to park.
Another perk of this campsite is that it is 45 minute drive from Milford Sound. There are a few sites a bit closer, including one campsite right at Milford Sound which is very hard to get a reservation for, but we chose to stay a bit further because it was the most beautiful site!
Also don't forget to do the Lake Gunn nature walk which begins near the entrance of the campsite. It is a casual 30-45 minutes walk through a magical, moss-covered forest that leads you to the shores of Lake Gunn. Big LOTR vibes.
For DOC campsites, don't forget to fill out the tags at the entrance of the campsite and put one of the ends on your dashboard. Otherwise, a ranger will wake you up in the middle of the night or early morning to confirm you have a reservation.
Cost per night: 15 NZD per person "
