"Þjóðvegur 1 (Route 1) is Iceland's famous Ring Road. It starts on the outskirts of Reykjavík (you can head north or southeast from here) and circles the entire country. The 821-mile road, finished in 1974, is completely paved with two wide lanes, except for 31 single-lane bridges in rural areas. It's now a major truck route and a popular tourist excursion. All road trips around Iceland are bound to include at least a section of this road."
