What people say

"Originally established by the Kotor nobleman Andrija Saracenus, historical accounts by the emperor writer Constantine Porphyrogenitus suggest that a smaller church dedicated to Sveti Tripun existed before it was lost to fire. The current cathedral, constructed in 1166, replaced this earlier Roman-style church and reflects a rich architectural heritage. Over the centuries, the cathedral has endured significant damage from earthquakes, particularly in the 16th century. Following these events, it underwent several renovations, most notably between 1584 and 1613, when it adopted a Renaissance Baroque appearance. The latest restoration, completed after the 1979 earthquake, returned some elements to their original 12th-century design. This cathedral is renowned for its impressive treasury, making it one of the oldest in Europe. Inside, visitors can admire 14th-century frescoes and a beautifully crafted stone ornament above the main altar depicting the life of Sveti Tripun, alongside a silver-gilded relief of saints. The relics of Sveti Tripun, the patron saint of Kotor, rest in a silver coffin within the cathedral. These relics were brought from Constantinople (Istanbul) in 809, and legends suggest that the Kotor Navy participated in their welcoming ceremony, a tradition that continues to this day. The cathedral's treasury also houses a range of exquisite items, including a silver hand and cross, Gothic sculptures, and marble altars from the 18th century, showcasing the rich artistic heritage of Kotor. Celebrated on Tripundan (Day of Sveti Tripun), this festival is one of the most significant in Kotor and honors the saint, who suffered martyrdom during the reign of Emperor Decius in the 3rd century. Adjacent to the cathedral stands the bishopric, the oldest institution in Kotor, which belonged to the prominent Drago family."
"The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, a majestic masterpiece dating back to 1166 (on the grounds of an earlier church from 809), stands as the crown jewel among Stari Grad's numerous churches and monasteries. It is one of Montenegro's most renowned cathedrals."
"part of this church was destroyed in an earthquake in the 1970s and rebuilt thanks to UNESCO"
