What people say

"Forte Mare Fortress, or Sea Fortress, stands majestically on the coast of Herceg Novi, guarding the city’s entrance from the sea. This historic fortification has played a pivotal role in the city’s turbulent history, serving as a crucial defense mechanism that controlled access to the town for centuries. The fortress is a testament to the early formation of a medieval settlement established by Tvrtko I Kotromanić in the 14th century, with its foundations dating back to 1382. Constructed between the 14th and 17th centuries, Forte Mare showcases a blend of architectural influences shaped by its various rulers. The Venetians undertook significant restoration work in the 17th century, during which the fortress acquired its current name and underwent transformations that diminished its defensive characteristics. This period marked a shift in the fortress's purpose, as it transitioned from a stronghold to a more ornamental structure. Following the Venetians, the Austro-Hungarians also contributed to the fortress’s development, enhancing its upper sections and maximizing its potential as a military communication hub. One notable aspect of Forte Mare is its innovative use of cement during construction, a material that was relatively new at the time. The discovery of cement’s waterproof properties led to its application in both the fortress and the facades of the old town, signifying an important advancement in building techniques. In 1952, the fortress was adapted into a summer stage, blending history with culture as it now serves as a venue for various performances and events, allowing visitors to experience its rich past in a contemporary setting. The Turks also played a significant role in the fortress's history, overseeing extensive renovations that gave the structure its current dimensions and earning it the unofficial nickname of the Strong Fortress. Today, visitors can explore the impressive ramparts and enjoy panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding landscape. The fortress stands as a symbol of resilience, reflecting the storied history of Herceg Novi and its strategic significance throughout the centuries."
"Fort Mare, which sits along the coastline, is an important place in Herceg Novi's history. It dates back to 1382 and originally served as a defensive stronghold against attacks from the sea."

While its neighbor Croatia gets a lot of attention among world travelers, Montenegro is a personal favorite of the places I've traveled to over the years! My husband and I were looking at places to go for our anniversary one day, hoping for a mix of what we both love when we travel. He's an outdoor adventure fanatic, looking for any and every opportunity to commune with the clouds. I, however, prefer to sit at a cafe table on a cobblestone street, drinking a cup of coffee and reading a book, while I take in the unique buildings and shop for that souvenir I'll take home to add to the collection. In my researching, I found unbeatable flights to a country I hadn't ever heard of, but had it all: Montenegro. Whether you prefer mountains, quaint walled cities, the sea, or a combination of all of these things, Montenegro won't disappoint. While only about the size of the state of Connecticut, Montenegro packs a punch with how much there is to see in the country. Montenegro is right across from Italy on the Adriatic Sea, sharing borders with Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania. With a 7 day trip, you can see the majority of the country, experiencing the variety and beauty of Montenegro and its people. In this guide, you'll find everything you need to plan your trip to Montenegro! **Included: a list of basic information for travel to Montenegro, recommendations for how to get around, places to stay, what to do, as well as a sample 7 day itinerary
