"Built in 1535-36 by Sheikh Abdullah Yamani, a scholar and spiritual leader, the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa quickly rose to prominence.
ts name translates to "Prince of the Arabs" in reference to Sheikh Abdullah Yamani's origin and his esteemed position within Bukhara's Muslim community. The madrasa attracted scholars and students from across Central Asia, establishing itself as a leading center for Islamic learning. Subjects like theology, law, philosophy, and even Arabic language were taught within its walls. nterestingly, the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa was the only religious institution in the USSR that remained operational after World War II. It continued to produce prominent Islamic scholars who served as religious leaders throughout the Soviet era.
The madrasa adheres to the traditional Central Asian madrasa design with a central courtyard surrounded by student dormitories (hujras) and lecture halls (darskhanas). The Mir-i-Arab Madrasa continues to function as a religious school, making it one of the few active madrasas remaining in Bukhara. Due to its active status as a religious institution, access to the interior of the madrasa is typically restricted to students and possibly authorized visitors."
