Riga Nativity of Christ Orthodox Cathedral

"Rīgas Kristus Piedzimšanas pareizticīgo katedrāle, or the Nativity of Christ Cathedral, is a significant Orthodox Christian cathedral located in Riga, the capital city of Latvia. It stands as one of the most prominent religious landmarks in the city and is renowned for its stunning architecture and cultural significance. Construction of the cathedral began in 1876 during the time when Latvia was part of the Russian Empire. It was designed by the distinguished Russian architect Robert Pflug in a striking Neo-Byzantine architectural style, characterized by its domes, arches, and intricate ornamentation. The cathedral was completed in 1884 and consecrated in the same year. The Nativity of Christ Cathedral served as the main Orthodox Christian church in Riga throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It played a crucial role in the religious and cultural life of the city's Orthodox community, hosting religious services, ceremonies, and events. During the Soviet era, the cathedral was closed by the authorities, and its interior was stripped of religious icons and decorations. It was repurposed for secular use, serving as a planetarium and later as a concert hall. Following Latvia's independence in 1991, the Nativity of Christ Cathedral was returned to the Orthodox Church. Extensive restoration work was undertaken to repair the damage inflicted during the Soviet period and restore the cathedral to its former glory."
