Wat Kalayanamit Woramahawihan

"Wat Kalayanamitr Varamahavihara, commonly known as Wat Kalayanamitr, is a prominent Buddhist temple situated on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. Established in 1825 by Chaophraya Nikonbodin, a prosperous Thai-Chinese trader, the temple was donated to King Rama III. The temple’s name, Kalayanamitr, translates to “true friend” and reflects the close ties between the temple’s founder and the royal family. The Kalayanamitr family, to which the temple belongs, also has connections to other significant temples such as Wat Rakhang and Wat Chakkrawatdirachawat Woramahawihan. The temple is best known for its impressive ordination hall, which features the Phra Buddha Trai Rattananayok, a monumental Buddha image commonly referred to as Luang Pho To, or the Big Buddha. This statue, one of the largest Buddha images in Bangkok, shares stylistic similarities with the famous Big Buddha at Wat Phanan Choeng in Ayutthaya. The image is revered by both ethnic Thais and Chinese Thais, and is believed to bring prosperity, good fortune, and safe travels. It is also associated with the legendary Chinese admiral Zheng He, and both Buddha images are regarded as symbolic figures of protection and fortune. The temple’s historical and cultural significance is further highlighted by the poem inscribed in its structure, which celebrates the temple’s creation and its importance as a sacred site. The temple, located along the riverbank, remains an active place of worship and a landmark in the Thonburi region, attracting both locals and visitors from around the world."
