"The Catacombe di San Giovanni (Catacombs of Saint John) are the second largest catacombs in Italy, covering a 10,000 square meter area built into an existing, Greek aqueduct. These graves were dug during the 4th until the 6th century A.D. of the Roman occupation of the city.
The site also features a church and crypt dedicated to San Marciano, the first bishop of Siracusa who was sent by Saint Peter himself to evangelize the local Romans.
Visits are possible with guided tours. All human remains were removed from this site in the early 20th century. "
