Amir Temur Square

"The predecessor of what is now Amir Timur Square was initially a park established during the tenure of the first governor-general of Russian Turkestan in the late 19th century. Originally known as Constantinov Square, it occupied the intersection of two major streets, Moscow Street (now Amir Timur Street) and Kaufmann Street (now Milza Ulugh Beg Street). Constructed in 1882 under the supervision of Nikolai Ulyanov, working under Mikhail Chernyayev, the park served as a green oasis amidst the bustling cityscape. Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, the square underwent a series of name changes, eventually becoming Revolution Square. During the late 1940s, a statue of Joseph Stalin graced the square, only to be removed in 1961 as part of a nationwide resolution to dismantle Stalin's monuments. In its place, a statue of Karl Marx was erected in 1968, reflecting the ideological shifts of the time. With the independence of Uzbekistan in 1991, the square underwent another transformation, being renamed Amir Timur Square in 1994 in honor of the renowned Central Asian conqueror. A statue of Amir Timur was installed at the site, symbolizing the nation's pride in its historical heritage. Adjacent to the park in the southern section, the Amir Timur Museum was constructed in 1996, further enhancing the square's cultural significance and serving as a tribute to Uzbekistan's illustrious past."
