Ong Ang Canal

"Khlong Ong Ang (คลองโอ่งอ่าง) is a historic canal in Bangkok, forming part of the outer moat, Khlong Rop Krung, that marks the eastern edge of Rattanakosin Island. The canal has played a significant role in the city's development since its establishment, serving as a crucial waterway for transport and trade. In recent years, however, it has undergone a major transformation to become a vibrant public space. In 2020, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) undertook a restoration project to revitalize Khlong Ong Ang, turning it into a pedestrian-friendly area featuring a walking street and night market. This restoration earned the project recognition from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), with Khlong Ong Ang receiving the prestigious Asian Townscape Award in 2020 for its successful blend of historical preservation and modern urban development. The Khlong Ong Ang Walking Street, which stretches along both sides of the canal, from Saphan Han Bridge to Damrong Sathit Bridge, is now a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The area is known for its lively atmosphere, where visitors can enjoy street food, local crafts, and traditional Thai cultural performances. The canal’s surrounding area, once mainly used for practical purposes, has now become a hub for leisure, commerce, and community engagement, contributing to the continued cultural and social vibrancy of Bangkok."
