What people say

"The episcopal complex, including the basilica itself, sacristy, baptistery, and the bell tower of the archbishop's palace, is one of the examples of early Byzantine architecture in the Mediterranean region. The oldest basilica was dedicated to Saint Mauro of Parentium and dates between the 2nd and 4th centuries. The mosaic floor of the oratory, originally part of a large Roman house, is still preserved in the church's garden. This oratory was expanded in the same century into a church comprising a nave and a twin basilica. The fish (a symbol of Jesus Christ) on the mosaic floor dates from this period. Coins with the portrait of Emperor Valens (365-378), found on the same site, confirm these dates. The current basilica, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in the 6th century during the time of Bishop Euphrasius. It was constructed in 553 on the site of the old basilica, which had fallen into disrepair. For the construction, parts of the old church were reused, and marble blocks were imported from the Sea of Marmara coast. The mosaic walls were created by Byzantine masters, and the floor by local experts. The construction took about 10 years. Euphrasius, holding the church in his arms, is represented in one of the mosaics, at the apex, near Saint Mauro. After the earthquake of 1440, the south wall of the basilica's central nave was restored, and new Gothic-style windows were installed in place of the destroyed ones."
