"Tickets start at 9,50 euros. It’s free for people under 18 and EU citizens under 26.
Visiting the castle is an absolute must. The site of the Château was originally a Roman structure. The castle itself was built in the 12th century and kept changing over the years. The counts of Carcassonne lived there.
Walking on the castle's walls is one of the highlights of the visit. Everything is well prepared with safety in mind. In any place that can represent even a small risk, there were detailed warnings in French and English as well. I still recommend being careful not to stumble, though. These steps have been here for centuries, and many people have walked them before, so they’re quite worn off in some places. There are also some narrow stairways, so this part of the visit wouldn’t be possible for baby strollers or wheelchairs.
The views from the walls are spectacular. You can have a panoramic view of the surrounding cities and vineyards, and on a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the Pyrenees mountain range!
Aside from being able to visit the walls, you will also be able to visit many of the castle's rooms. Many of them host a museum with historical artifacts that were found at Carcassonne. The museum helps us understand how long Carcassonne has been inhabited and how many layers of history still exist here. To complete this experience, take a closer look at the walls when you’re leaving or entering the citadel. You can literally see the different layers, all the way down to the original Gallo-Roman structure.
