"Built in 1514 by Ubaidullah Khan, a descendent of Genghis Khan, the Kalon Mosque is considered one of the largest mosques ever built in Central Asia. Part of the Poyi Kalon complex, which also includes the iconic Kalon Minaret and the Mir-i Arab Madrasah.
he Kalon Mosque stands on the foundations of an earlier 8th-century mosque destroyed by Genghis Khan. Legend has it that Genghis Khan was so impressed by the beauty of the original minaret (the current Kalon Minaret) that he ordered it spared while destroying the rest of the city.
The roof of the mosque is a breathtaking spectacle, featuring a seemingly endless array of 288 small domes."
