"The National Theater Ivan Vazov, a cornerstone of Bulgarian intellectual society, opened its doors on January 3, 1907, with a grand stage performance of Ivan Vazov's "The Outcasts," a key work from the Bulgarian Renaissance. Originally named "The National Theater," it was renamed in 1962 to honor Ivan Vazov, the "father" of Bulgarian literature and drama.
The theater’s building, designed by Viennese architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Felner, is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Its façade, influenced by mythology, features Poseidon/Neptune riding a chariot pulled by four horses, accompanied by two additional chariots atop the domes on either side of the entrance.
Throughout its 120-year history, the theater has endured many challenges. A significant fire during a 1923 performance nearly destroyed the building. Reconstruction began promptly in 1925, led by German architect Martin Dülfer, who introduced modern steel and concrete construction—making the National Theater the first of its kind in Bulgaria. Dülfer also installed state-of-the-art German theatrical mechanizations by MANN and Krupp, which have functioned flawlessly for 88 years.
The theater sustained damage during an American bombing in January 1944, which destroyed the south wing but left the iconic façade intact. Following repairs, the first balcony, once mobile, was permanently fixed. The chariots on the domes, secured by springs, have remained remarkably untouched by time or need for maintenance.
Nestled in the scenic City Garden, the National Theater Ivan Vazov has three stages, with the main stage seating 860 guests. It offers an immersive experience, blending architectural grandeur with the emotional power of live performance. After enjoying a play, visitors can take a serene walk through the romantic park that surrounds this iconic cultural institution."
