"Jordan has a handful of important Christian sites (see Madaba for the vast majority of them). However, the crown jewel of the sites is Bethany, home to the location of Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist.
Today, the actual baptism site is about 200 meters inland, likely due to frequent earthquakes that shift the Jordan River's course. The main reason archeologists conclude this is the site is the presence of churches dating back to 300 CE, signifying the sight's longtime religious significance.
While you do see hoards of pilgrims being dunked into the river to be baptized (you can do it too if you find a priest which isn't hard), and there are some pretty churches on the sight, today Bethany is predominantly an archaeological site showing the different religious buildings on this site over the centuries. It is also the only place you can touch the Jordan River in the whole country (given the militarized nature of the border). "
