"The Hector Pieterson Museum is a large museum located in Orlando West, Soweto, two blocks away from where Hector Pieterson was shot and killed on 16 June 1976. The museum is named in his honour, and covers the events of the anti-Apartheid Soweto Uprising, where more than 170 protesting schoolchildren were killed. This event shaped the South African educational system in a legendary way, we cannot talk about South African history without mentioning the “June 16” story. This day was made a holiday ( Youth Day) to commemorate the Soweto uprising. The Museum houses a collection of oral testimonies, photographs, audiovisual screen displays, and historical documents. "

"South Africa is a country, like most others, whose history is far from perfect. As a nation once under Apartheid, our history is filled with people who stood for change. One such individual who tragically fell victim to police brutality during a peaceful school protest was Hector Pieterson. During a demonstration where hundreds of children marched against being forced to learn in Afrikaans, Hector was shot & killed by police. A photograph of him being carried by a friend, with his sister by his side, was captured by a photographer & soon became an iconic symbol of the injustice of Apartheid."
"An eye-opening museum providing more information and history into the tragic riots."
