"Despite its name ("new bridge"), this bridge's construction was completed in 1642. It received another inauguration ceremony 27 years later, by young Louis XIV. He was on his way to the Basque Country for his wedding to Marie-Thérèse of Austria and took a little break to inaugurate the bridge along the way.
There are many "new" bridges like this throughout Europe (the oldest bridge in Paris, for example, is Pont Neuf), reminding us that they were all new and modern at some point in history!
The fact that these structures have withstood the test of time is still impressive, especially in this case. In 1875, a massive flood in the Garonne valley killed 3000 people. The river rose more than 8 meters above normal. Pont Neuf was the only bridge in Toulouse that wasn’t destroyed then.

"Like Paris, Toulouse boasts its own Pont Neuf over the Garonne. This stone bridge is one of the oldest on the river, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, linking the popular historic centre on the east bank, to the Saint-Cyprien quarter on the west."
