Marina Barrage

"Marina Barrage, located in southern Singapore, is a pioneering dam that sits at the confluence of five rivers, bridging Marina East and Marina South across the Marina Channel. Initially envisioned in 1987 by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to boost Singapore’s water self-sufficiency, construction of the barrage commenced in 2005. It was inaugurated on October 31, 2008, transforming the Marina Bay area into the country’s fifteenth reservoir—Marina Reservoir—comprising fresh water for the first time in its history. The barrage serves three primary functions: water storage, flood control, and recreational space for residents and visitors alike. This engineering feat earned international acclaim, securing the Superior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in 2009, underscoring its significance in environmental engineering and water management."
