What people say

Esmee van de Biezen
"Castle Staverden, though built in 1835, is tied to a much older tale from around 1300. The Woman in Black, as she is known, lived with her parents at Kasteel de Wildenborch. On her mother’s deathbed, she was forced to promise to marry a man she didn’t love. However, after her parents’ deaths, she followed her heart and married Herman, the man she truly loved. Tragically, their happiness was short-lived, as Herman was killed by the very man she had been promised to. Grief-stricken, she fled to Castle Staverden, where she eventually died of loneliness in 1356. Her restless spirit has since been seen wandering the grounds of Staverden, draped in black, mourning the love she lost. On a small island behind the castle garden, a memorial stone stands in her honor, marking the spot where her sorrowful presence is still felt."
