"Carl Eldh, a prominent Swedish sculptor, was active from 1904 to 1954 and became renowned for his portrait sculptures and large public monuments, many of which are spread throughout Sweden. Eldh's artistic journey began at an early age, showing talent in sculpture as a teenager. After attending Technical Evening School in Stockholm, he pursued formal studies in Paris from 1897 to 1904. There, he gained recognition for his works, such as the acclaimed *Grieving Mother*. Upon his return to Sweden, Eldh received numerous commissions, contributing to major architectural projects, including Ragnar Östberg’s Stockholm City Hall. One of Eldh’s most famous subjects was the Swedish writer August Strindberg, whom he depicted in various sculptures, and his portrait repertoire extended to both historical and contemporary figures. Eldh’s ability to capture the essence of his subjects made him a leading portrait sculptor of his time. His studio in Stockholm, designed by architect Ragnar Östberg in 1919, became both his workspace and a museum following his death. The museum houses over 500 plaster sketches and sculptures in bronze, stone, and clay, along with personal memorabilia. Eldh’s private garden surrounding the studio was a place of both work and rest. Over the years, his daughter, Brita Eldh, who later became the museum's first director, enriched the garden with sculptures and plants. Today, the garden serves as a tranquil space for museum visitors, blending art and nature. It reflects Eldh’s love for working outdoors and offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustle, despite its central location in Bellevue park. The Carl Eldh Museum and its surrounding garden have been preserved and restored to maintain their historical integrity. The garden, which blooms beautifully in spring and early summer, is a testament to the legacy of Eldh's life and work, allowing visitors to explore his art in a serene environment.
