Stone Gate

"The Stone Gate, or Kamenita Vrata, is a historic landmark located in the Upper Town of Zagreb, Croatia. Constructed between 1242 and 1266, its current appearance dates from the 18th century after several renovations. Positioned at Kamenita Ulica 3, the Stone Gate serves as a key entrance to the Upper Town and is renowned for its historical and cultural significance. Inside the gate is a revered shrine dedicated to God's Mother of the Stony Gate, a title for Mary, Mother of Jesus, who is the patron saint of Zagreb. The shrine houses a gilded icon of Mary holding baby Jesus, which is believed to have miraculously survived a fire that destroyed much of the original structure. Visitors to the shrine often light candles and offer prayers, making it a significant site for Catholic worshippers in Zagreb. The shrine is adorned with marble-carved prayers, and the space includes benches and a table for candle lighting. The Stone Gate is also a notable cultural landmark, featured prominently in the historical romance novel Zlatarevo Zlato (The Goldsmith's Treasure) by August Šenoa. A small statue of one of the novel's main characters, Dora Krupić, sculpted by Croatian artist Ivo Kerdić, is placed in a niche within the landmark.
