"Kranjska Gora is a small town in northwest Slovenia along the Austrian border. The Sava Dolinka and Pišnica rivers run through it. This area was first settled in the 11th century. A trade route to Italy was established by the 14th century. An Ottoman attack came after that. During World War I, Russian prisoners of war built a wooden chapel in honor of their soldiers killed during an avalanche while building a road over the Vršič Pass. Then a mass grave of German soldiers was discovered here at the end of World War II.
After the war, Kranjska Gora developed into a winter sports destination. The Kranjska Gora Ski Resort is the oldest ski resort in Slovenia. It hosts the Vitranc Cup, part of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, every year. Cross-country skiing, the halfpipe, ski jumping, and sledding are also available that time of year. While fishing, hiking, and whitewater rafting are popular during the summer. The scenery is spectacular all year, though."
