Alameda del Tajo

"Created in 1806 by order of King Ferdinand VII, the Alameda del Tajo has provided locals and tourists with a peaceful retreat for over two centuries. The park was designed by architect José Martin de Aldehuela – also responsible for the design of other iconic structures in Ronda, such as the Puente Nuevo bridge – who envisioned it as a place where people could relax amidst lush greenery while enjoying panoramic views. The name “Alameda” comes from the Spanish word “álamo”, meaning poplar, which was originally planted here to provide shade during the hot summer days. Although these trees no longer exist today due to various plant diseases throughout history, they have been replaced by different species, such as cypresses, chestnut trees and palms, which continue to give this park its unique charm. Situated on the western edge of Ronda’s historic centre, near the Plaza de Toros (Spain’s oldest bullring), this public garden covers an area of ​​approximately 27,000 square metres. Despite being close to the hustle and bustle of the city, entering the Alameda del Tajo is like entering another world – one full of tranquillity and beauty. The well-kept walkways, lined with benches, invite visitors to take a stroll or simply sit and soak in the serene surroundings. The park is also home to a variety of bird species, which adds to its natural charm. While the verdant beauty of the Alameda del Tajo is captivating in itself, what truly sets this park apart are the breathtaking views it offers. At the end of the main promenade is a balcony known as the “Balcony of Coño”, which offers panoramic views of the El Tajo gorge and the Guadalevín River below. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and the Serranía de Ronda The tourist platform was built in 1847 and has since become one of Ronda’s most popular tourist attractions.
