What people say

"The Puerta del León or Puerta de la Montería is the main entrance to the Real Alcázar of Seville. The gate is the main access to the Patio del León and the palace of King Pedro I. Its construction is in the Almohad style and is 8.50 metres high. The name documented in writings prior to the 19th century is Puerta de la Montería. It is known that the name of the gate comes from the courtyard to which it gives access, the Patio de la Montería. The origin of the name of this courtyard is unknown, although various hypotheses have been proposed. The most accepted is that the courtyard was decorated with hunting scenes. Today the gate is better known by the name Puerta del León due to the figure of a lion that is found on the lintel of the door, with the Latin inscription Ad Utrumque. The current name seems to have originated in the 19th century within romantic literary circles."
