"
The Old Monastery of Santa Clara was built at the behest of Isabella of Aragon, known as the Holy Queen, to replace a small convent of Poor Clare nuns founded in 1286.
Due to its location on the banks of the Mondego River, the monastery was frequently subject to flooding. In the 17th century, King D. João IV had a new convent built on an elevated point in the city which took the name of Santa Clara. a-Nova, where the nuns moved in 1677. The first monastery was renamed Santa Clara-a-Velha and remained in a state of abandonment until it fell into ruins. They are just a few meters away from each other and I recommend you visit them both
👣How to get there: reachable on foot from Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Nova (650m,12min).Bus stop: Rossio de Santa Clara, line 14T.

"This old monument is worth an hour of your time for your visit with its museum that shows how the nuns lived in older times. You also get to explore the restaured building of the monastery where the Queen Elizabeth of Portugal chose to be buried."
