Sergel's Square

"Sergels torg, or Sergel's Square, is a major public square in Stockholm, completed in the 1960s and named after the 18th-century sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel. The square features a sunken pedestrian plaza known as Plattan, adorned with a triangular-colored floor pattern. This area connects to Drottninggatan, a key pedestrian street leading south to Stockholm Old Town and north to Kungsgatan. At the center of the square is a roundabout highlighted by a striking glass obelisk, which serves as a focal point amidst the surrounding traffic. The square's history dates back to early proposals in the 1920s, but it wasn't until the 1950s and 1960s that significant development occurred. A final design introduced a superellipse-shaped fountain and the iconic obelisk, designed by Edvin Öhrström, symbolizing the intersection of modern architecture and public space. Kulturhuset, a cultural center housing the Stockholm City Theatre, occupies the southern part of the square, further enhancing its role as a hub for cultural activities. Despite its significance, Sergels torg has faced criticism for prioritizing vehicular traffic over pedestrian access, leading to ongoing discussions about its future.
