"The Spanish Fortress, also known as Španjola, is a hidden gem perched atop a hill in Herceg Novi, offering visitors a fascinating blend of breathtaking panoramic views and a rich historical narrative spanning over five centuries. Although this fortress is the least visited among the town’s three main fortifications, the effort to reach it is well rewarded, providing one of the most picturesque vistas of the surrounding landscape and the Adriatic Sea. Many first-time visitors may be surprised to discover that the Spanish Empire once ruled over Herceg Novi, if only for a brief period. Their occupation began with a surprise attack on the town in 1538, when they seized control from the Ottomans. However, their hold on the settlement was short-lived, lasting only about nine months before the Ottomans regained power. Despite its brief history, the Spanish laid the groundwork for the fortress that carries their name. Although the structure was not completed until a decade later by the Ottomans, the foundations they established set the stage for what would become a significant defensive stronghold. Today, the Spanish Fortress stands partially in ruins, gradually being reclaimed by the lush natural environment that surrounds it. This creates an atmosphere of intrigue, where visitors can explore hidden corners and discover unique photo opportunities amid the remnants of the past. The fortress is a testament to the town's layered history, with crumbling walls and ancient stonework that tell stories of its strategic importance over the centuries. Reaching the fortress requires a bit of a hike, but the journey is enjoyable. The best approach is to look for the signposted road opposite Kanli Kula on the Adriatic Highway. A leisurely 10-minute walk will take you to the top, where the stunning views await.
