"The Špilberk castle was established in the 13th century for the primary goal of protecting the city. Throughout its' years it has been used as a residency and later on mainly for military reasons. The castle was used as a jail during the Austro-Hungarian empire as well as later during the Nazi occupation. Nowadays you can visit the museum for free and walk around its courtyards. For a small fee you can also visit indoor exhibitions as part of the Brno City Museum. "
"Špilberk Castle is a medieval fortress that once served as a royal castle and later a notorious prison. Today, it houses a museum showcasing the city’s history. The hilltop castle also offers stunning views of Brno and its surroundings."
