Over the centuries, the chapel underwent several transformations, eventually being replaced by the current cathedral in the late 19th century. The construction of the cathedral was initiated by Prince Charles III, who envisioned a grand edifice that would reflect the principality's growing prominence and devotion to the Catholic faith. The project was entrusted to French architect Léon Homolle, who meticulously crafted a design that blended Romanesque and Byzantine architectural elements."
