What people say

Nally Preseault
"Are you ready to start hiking in South Iceland? Reykjadalur is the perfect first hike. A large parking lot sits near Reykjadalur Café on the northern edge of Hveragerði. You'll cross a bridge over the Varmá (Warm River) to follow a gravel path that climbs through the Reykjadalur Valley. Fumaroles, hot springs, and mud pools line the trail. Waterfalls are off in the distance. Views extend all the way to the coast. It's three kilometers (45-60 minutes) uphill, but you definitely won't want to turn right back around. There's a hot-spring thermal river, surrounded by wooden boardwalks, green grass, and wildflowers (or snow in the winter) at the top. It's a popular spot to strip down and soak in the warm water. The higher you go, the hotter the water gets. Just be sure to leave your modesty in the rental car. Wooden partitions act as substitutes for changing rooms. They leave little to the imagination. Don't let that stop you. Note: Given how close it is to Reykjavík, this trail is very popular. Go early, late (taking advantage of the midnight sun), or during the winter (don't forget your crampons) to avoid the crowds."

Mentioned in these guides

Active volcanoes. Dancing northern lights. Gushing geysers. Massive glaciers. Thermal hot springs. Thundering waterfalls. Iceland is the ultimate adventure destination. How have you not been here yet? It’s finally time. Start in the northernmost capital in the world. Reykjavik is a hip, modern city. Then start exploring the wild coastline, the sheep-filled countryside, the icy interior, and the peaceful islands. There are plenty of black-sand beaches, small fishing villages, turf-roofed houses, and epic hikes along the way. Just remember to pack layers. Sometimes, the Gulf Stream provides moderate temperatures. Other times, it’ll feel like you’re in the Arctic. Also don’t forget the long, dark winters and the 24-hour daylight during the short summers. If you take advantage of Icelandair’s free stopover program—a great excuse to visit Helsinki, Copenhagen, and even Paris—you can keep returning to discover which season you like best.
