"Are you ready to start hiking in South Iceland? Reykjadalur is the perfect first hike. A large parking lot sits near Reykjadalur Café on the northern edge of Hveragerði. You'll cross a bridge over the Varmá (Warm River) to follow a gravel path that climbs through the Reykjadalur Valley. Fumaroles, hot springs, and mud pools line the trail. Waterfalls are off in the distance. Views extend all the way to the coast. It's three kilometers (45-60 minutes) uphill, but you definitely won't want to turn right back around. There's a hot-spring thermal river, surrounded by wooden boardwalks, green grass, and wildflowers (or snow in the winter) at the top. It's a popular spot to strip down and soak in the warm water. The higher you go, the hotter the water gets. Just be sure to leave your modesty in the rental car. Wooden partitions act as substitutes for changing rooms. They leave little to the imagination. Don't let that stop you.
Note: Given how close it is to Reykjavík, this trail is very popular. Go early, late (taking advantage of the midnight sun), or during the winter (don't forget your crampons) to avoid the crowds."
