Silfra

"Silfra is a fissure, a crack in the earth's crust, filled with crystal-clear glacial water. It's located within Þingvellir National Park in Iceland, a place steeped in both history and dramatic geology. The park sits in a rift valley, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are pulling apart. This creates a landscape of towering cliffs, fissures, and lava rock formations, making Silfra a truly unique diving and snorkeling experience. Silfra is a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, as the visibility is often over 100 meters. The water in Silfra is incredibly clear because it's filtered for years as it slowly percolates through layers of lava rock. This filtration process also makes the water very cold, averaging around 2°C (35°F) year-round. Divers and snorkelers need to wear special dry suits to stay warm in the frigid water. Here are some other reasons why Silfra is such a special place: It's one of the only places in the world where you can snorkel or dive between two tectonic plates.
