"One of the landmarks of Agios Nikolaos is Lake Voulismeni, located in the very center of the town. The water of the lake is connected to the sea. There are several bars and restaurants around the lake, which makes the place quite lively at night. As with almost everything in Crete, several legends surround the lake. For example, according to Greek mythology, the goddesses Athena and Artemis bathed here. Local legend wanted the lake to be bottomless, as it was believed to be a passage to communicate with evil spirits. However, in 1853 it was found that the depth of the lake in the center is 64 m. For a better view of the lake and the sea, it is better to go to the street that borders the upper part of the lake. In the center of Agios Nikolaos, there are several walking paths that end where the lake meets the sea. Lined with small souvenir shops, jewelry, bars, and cafes, these roads are meeting places for visitors and locals alike. One place we definitely recommend is Peripou. Peripou is an alternative music bar with a rooftop area with a great view of the lake. The bar is located on the pedestrian path on October 28 street.
