"This church is dedicated to Pope Sylvester I. The name "capite" refers to first. But some probably assume it's a reference to the relic that is in the side chapel: the skull of St. John the Baptist. There are other churches in the world that claim to have this relic; this has become one of the relics skeptics and non-Catholics alike point to criticize the Church’s traditions. It’s important to remember that we don’t believe there is a magical power to relics. They are not amulets or good luck charms. The grace that comes, like the grace that comes from all sacramentals, does not come from the thing itself, but from the faith of the person brings to honoring them. Praying in front of the skull of John the Baptist should prompt me to reflect on his courage and witness. That man died for the truth. Would I be willing to do the same? That man knew Jesus–probably played with him, ate with him, laughed with him. What is my relationship with Jesus like?"
