"The origins of the Three Crosses Monument can be traced back to at least the 17th century. Legend tells of seven Franciscan monks who were martyred on the hill, with three being crucified. Wooden crosses were erected on the hill to commemorate them.
The wooden crosses were replaced with concrete ones designed by architect Antoni Wiwulski in 1916, during the German occupation of Vilnius in World War I. Sadly, the Soviet regime demolished this monument in 1950.
The current monument, designed by architect Henrikas Kęstutis Šilgalis, was finally erected in 1989 as Lithuania regained its independence. This act of rebuilding served as a powerful symbol of hope and national resurgence."
