What people say

Nally Preseault
"Basalt rock stacks. Black sand. Enormous waves. Sea caves. Reynisfjara is one of the most beautiful, famous, and dangerous beaches in Iceland. While you're in awe of the scenery, don't gloss over the dangerous part. Seriously. There are warnings--both signs and lights--as you walk toward the beach. Tall swells, sneaker waves, and strong currents are always a threat, even on days that seem quite calm. Visitors are pulled out to sea every year. It's scary. But you should absolutely still visit this beach. From the Ring Road, you'll head south on Route 215. If you're driving from the west, the right turn is well before you reach the village of Vík. You'll pass a small church and a few guesthouses as you head south toward the water. Large paid parking lots and a restaurant sit at the edge of the sand. Reynisfjara is always crowded. It's easy to walk from everyone, though. Once you do, it'll feel like you have the whole beach to yourself."

"Touristy, but an incredible beach and area to walk around. The black beaches are stunning. I really enjoyed my time here!"

Mentioned in these guides

Active volcanoes. Dancing northern lights. Gushing geysers. Massive glaciers. Thermal hot springs. Thundering waterfalls. Iceland is the ultimate adventure destination. How have you not been here yet? It’s finally time. Start in the northernmost capital in the world. Reykjavik is a hip, modern city. Then start exploring the wild coastline, the sheep-filled countryside, the icy interior, and the peaceful islands. There are plenty of black-sand beaches, small fishing villages, turf-roofed houses, and epic hikes along the way. Just remember to pack layers. Sometimes, the Gulf Stream provides moderate temperatures. Other times, it’ll feel like you’re in the Arctic. Also don’t forget the long, dark winters and the 24-hour daylight during the short summers. If you take advantage of Icelandair’s free stopover program—a great excuse to visit Helsinki, Copenhagen, and even Paris—you can keep returning to discover which season you like best.
