The Best Playgrounds in Lisbon (that happen to have refreshment kiosks attached to them!)

The Best Playgrounds in Lisbon (that happen to have refreshment kiosks attached to them!)

Larry Majewski / Europe for the Family
Have you ever taken your kids to a playground with a coffee in your hand? How about a beer? Glass of wine? At your home playground, that may be frowned upon. But, in Lisbon, playgrounds and refreshment kiosks often enjoy a symbiotic relationship. There are dozens of refreshment kiosks (quiosques) scattered around Lisbon serving coffee, beer, wine, classic drinks and an array of snacks or bites – no two kiosks menus are exactly alike. Locals have a place to meet up with friends or colleagues. Visitors have a chance for a unique cultural experience. Every now and then, those kiosks pop up near playgrounds. Or is it the other way around? Either way, here are a few exceptionally safe spots for you to unwind or recharge while your kids get some wiggles out.

Gengibre da Estrella in Parque Estrela

Gengibre da Estrela

This quiosque is adjacent to two playgrounds in the heart of Jardim da Estrela: a turn-of-the-century park with winding paths, relaxing ponds and vibrant botanical wonders.

Jardim da Estrela is a large pentagon-shaped green space with grassy patches, shady trees, babbling ponds and paved sidewalks (which you almost never see in Lisbon). There are a couple of playgrounds of varying agility levels adjacent to this kiosk. That fact alone is what makes it noteworthy. There is a second kiosk in Jardim da Estrela, called Banana Cafe. But, Gengibre da Estrela is much closer to the playgrounds, so it gets the preferential nod. Notably, there's are adjacent restrooms

There are two large playgrounds with swings, slides and climbing apparatus for all ages. Surface: tiny gravel.

Beca Beca at Parque Infantil do Eduardo VII

Caffe Bar Beca Beca

This is a destination playground for family and friends to meet up. The music is upbeat and sometimes there's a DJ!

Parque Eduardo VII is massive. It's occasionally set up to host big events, like when the pope came to town. Most of the time, it's a big open space, and shade can be found alongside its edges. Parque Eduardo VII sits atop the posh Avenida da Liberdade and the gentle slope reveals greater Lisbon below. The immediate area is decidedly urban with hotels and office buildings surrounding the green space. Of note, the Estufa Fria Botanical Gardens & Greenhouse is nearby.  Also, Beca Beca does have one bathroom.

This playground is home to the most unique swingset we've ever seen -- it's circular! There is equipment for all ages. Surface: sand.

Quiosque and Playground in Praça da Alegria

Quiosque Alegria
@europeforthefamily
This is a pretty fancy quiosque. To wit, I've been here when suddenly a jazz duo set up and played. The drink prices are high, but since it is run by the Hotel Alegria, you enjoy lobby bathroom privileges across the street.

Alegria means happy in Portuguese, which is appropriate since this little square can be your "happy place." Praça da Alegria is a pocket park tucked off the busy Avenida da Liberdade. There are some tremendous old growth trees and a fountain to provide some tranquility to a city buzzing just a block or two away. It's worth noting that since the quiosque is run by the Hotel Alegria, you can enjoy lobby bathroom privileges across the street.

Admittedly, not the most complete playground: a few swings and a small slide. The charm of rest of the park makes up for it. Surface: rubber.

Hamburgueria da Prada in Campo de Ourique

Quiosque de Campo de Ourique - Hamburgueria da Parada
@europeforthefamily
If your kids needs to eat, but can't be trusted to sit down in a restaurant, this quiosque slings burgers and libations. You won't be writing home about the burgers, but the setting is a post card.

Campo de Ourique takes a little effort to get to, so you won't find many tourists around. Interestingly, this corner of Lisbon is home to a large French population. Appropriately, the nearby Mercado de Campo de Ourique is worth a visit. As for the park, it comprises one block of this gridded neighborhood. There are ducks swimming around and park benches tucked into nooks and crannies - what else do you want? The playground isn't technically next to the quiosque, but if you intimate that you'll bring back any glassware, you should be fine.

Parque Infantil Jardim Teófilo Braga

This is a good-sized playground for all age groups. Don't forget to check out the ducks swimming around nearby.

Larry Majewski / Europe for the Family
Traveling with children? I'm Larry and I want to make European travel enjoyable and accessible for the entire family. My wife and I didn’t want to let go of our love of travel to Europe once we had kids. But naps, diapers and snack times definitely changed our approach. We filled in the gaps left by traditional travel resources and developed tips, tools and strategies for successful European trips with children. Our family currently lives in Lisbon, Portugal and before that we owned and operated a Spanish tapas restaurant in the US. We enjoy traditional food, but have a special place in our hearts (read: bellies) for new interpretations of the old favorites. We understand the nuances of traveling with little ones. Most European itineraries are designed for adults- singles, couples, retirees. Now, young families can also experience European travel with all the details sorted. We offer guides, custom plans and planning services for families who share a sense of adventure. - Guides - Tailored Recommendations - Custom Itineraries - Planning Services Cheers!
