Rome Culinary Guide

Rome Culinary Guide

Roman cuisine is so much more than the ordinary pasta and pizza that everyone assumes at first instance. Being highly influenced by the 'poor person's' concept of cooking, our cuisine is filled with traditional historic recipes, which have been handed down through several generations and transformed over the course of time. With hundreds of restaurants all serving their own versions of classics and innovative dishes, you will have a culinary experience that will exceed your expectations. Having said this, Rome can be a very confusing and overwhelming city to visit. With so many restaurants, bars and food establishments in general to choose from, it's very easy to fall into tourist traps. This is my guide with all my favourite food and beverage spots that you must visit when in Rome!

Trecca - Roma
@tomasrhill
My favourite restaurant in Rome. A modern Trattoria, serving up Roman classics with a contemporary touch of finesse. An ever-changing menu based on seasonal and local produce, including classic Roman dishes and other innovative plates. Their 'Padellotto regaglie di pollo e patate' (chicken innards and roast potatoes) is a staple and always on the menu ever since I first dined here. My favourite dish here and I highly recommend it. Another stand out dish is their amatriciana, for me the best in Rome. Their wine list is also fantastic, with a great natural influence. The sommelier, Diego, is an expert in this field and will be one of the nicest people you'll encounter. A classy rustic setting, great vibes and the staff very attentive and knowledgeable. They have an online booking system on their site and instagram. Make sure to book in advance!

Another one of my favourites here in Rome. A modern trattoria serving up classics from Roman cuisine and other Italian regions. An immense wine list, probably the largest I've laid my eyes on, with some incredible bottles and a great variety of choice. Famously known for their carbonara, it is arguably the best in Rome (for me hands down). Another staple here is their ox tail deep-fried meatball, taken from the Roman classic 'coda alla vaccinara'. They also do an incredible maritozzo, made with burnt flour and green peppercorns. An immaculate vibe and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They have an online booking system on their site & instagram. Make sure to book in advance!

Trattoria Pennestri
@tomasrhill
A fantastic Trattoria serving up Roman and other Italian classics with an innovative twist. An extensive wine list, with a great natural influence. The menu changes depending on the season and showcases incredible local produce. The food follows a simplistic approach executed to perfection. Stand out dishes were their maltagliati pasta with chicken innards, marsala wine and pecorino, and their chocolate mousse, pane carasau, olive oil and salt. A very welcoming vibe and the staff are fantastic. They only take bookings over the phone and also email.

Ristoro degli Angeli
@tomasrhill
An incredible Roman restaurant in a historic district of the city, Garbatella. Roman classics are served here by respecting traditional recipes and techniques, but also going off track slightly and getting creative. Wine here is no joke, and their wine list reflects just that. Stand out dishes are their 'Fiori di Zucca', deep-fried courgette flowers stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies, and their homemade custard ice cream, served with extra-virgin olive oil, maldon salt, dark chocolate crumble and a touch of rosemary. A very rustic setting with a cosy vibe, matched with very courteous staff They take bookings via phone and email.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hey! My name is Tom, a Roman obsessed with his city. I was born in Rome and grew up here till the age of 12, before moving to the UK and living there for almost 10 years. I am half Italian (from my mum's side) and half English (dad's side). I still spent a lot of time in Rome and Italy, visiting all my friends and family multiple times a year. I've previously worked as a chef for almost 8 years, including 4 of these in a Michelin recognised Italian restaurant. A few years ago I decided to move back home, as I felt it was the right place for me and where I wanted to be long-term. I now work as a freelance translator. Ever since I came back, I immersed myself in Rome's culinary delights to expand my already significant food & beverage repertoire. In addition, I discovered a new passion for Rome's immense and mesmerising art, including churches, museums, viewpoints and much more. On my page you'll find Rome recommendations of all types, helping you experience my beautiful city to its fullest. TikTok: tomasrhill Instagram: eatdrink_rome
