🎄 UPDATED FOR 2024 🎄
This guide takes everything in my Cologne Christmas market guide and adds on three day trip options to nearby smaller town Christmas markets!
These day trips can be done as three separate days or combined - each location needs about a half day. Cologne makes for a great headquarters to explore the city slowly and do a few easy day trips to see smaller town versions of Christmas markets!
In this guide, you'll get:
- dates & locations for the markets
- details on which are the more major ones and which are smaller/more niche
- themes, or what distinguishes each from the others
- additional events that run just one weekend of the month
- specialty foods to try
- how to get between towns without a car
- hotel suggestions for Cologne

Cologne Christmas Markets
First up: Cologne! It's a great home base for exploring because it's big enough to have plenty of places to eat and stay (not to mention great Christmas markets!) but also a hub for the regional train system.
One small note: Cologne in German is written Köln - same place, pronounced similarly.
Foods to Try
In addition to the classics like gluhwein and sausages, there are tons of delicious goodies worth trying!
🍖Local specialties:
pork knuckle

Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater!
I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where!
I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too!
If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you!
My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny.
I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
