When thinking of Maldives most people think of luxurious resorts with over-water bungalows. Since 2009 also guest houses on local island opened giving travelers a more affordable option.

Price per night range from 100 Dollars for a double room to more than 5,000 Dollars.

If you are unsure if local islands or resorts are a better fit for you and you are looking for recommendations for accommodation this guide is for you! After visiting more than 30 islands in Maldives I would like to share some insights with you.

Local islands

Local islands are inhabited islands where Maldivians live and work, featuring small guesthouses and local businesses.

Pros:

- Guesthouses, budget hotels, excursions (e. g. snorkeling, diving and island hopping) are much cheaper compared to resorts and you can compare different operators.

- Opportunity to experience Maldivian traditions, food, and daily life in a local community.

- Local restaurants and cafes offer traditional Maldivian cuisine at low prices.

- Supporting local businesses and communities helps with sustainable tourism.

Cons:

- As a Muslim country, local islands observe strict rules regarding modesty, alcohol prohibition, and dress codes outside of bikini beaches.

- Basic accommodation compared to resorts; no overwater villas or extravagant amenities.

- Reaching local islands often involves public ferries or speedboats with fixed schedules, which may not be as convenient as private transfers.

- Beaches may not be as pristine or well-maintained as those on resort islands and do not offer the same level of privacy.

Resort islands

Resort islands are private islands developed exclusively for tourism, with accommodations, dining, and leisure facilities designed for guests.

Pros:

- Limited access ensures a secluded environment, ideal for honeymoons or peaceful retreats.

- Luxury amenities and high-end service such as overwater villas, infinity pools, spas, fine dining, and private beaches.

Cons:

-  Costs for accommodation, food, and services are high, with some resorts charging thousands per night.

- Resorts are isolated from local communities, offering little insight into Maldivian culture and local life.

Here are my top recommendation (from least to most expensive)
