Amsterdam Must-Do's (Food and Sights Edition)
Let me start by saying, of all the places that we have visited, Amsterdam would be the only one we would consider living full time. Not like that is in the works, but if it was, you would find me buried in stroopwafels, riding a bike to work while passing by the beautiful matrix of canals. The city is full of vibrant colors, the people are warm and welcoming, the city is beautifully planned, and the way of life is something to be desired.
Getting There:
We flew on Iceland Air with a layover in Reykjavik (fun fact, if you have the time, build in a complementary layover in Iceland for up to 7 days on Iceland Air!)
Once we landed, we opted to take the train into the city. It was pretty cheap (about 10 euro) and direct, taking about 20-25 minutes to get into the city. The train station is located on the bottom floor of the airport's main terminal. You can easily purchase tickets at one of the yellow ticket machines in the airport - just make sure you know what train station is closest to your hotel.
We always found the best train/tram by using Apple maps - all the information is right at your fingertips. You could also opt for a cab ($$) or the bus.
After we got to the train station closest to our hotel, we then jumped on a tram for a few stops. Using the tram is really easy! Once you get on the bus, you just need to visit the person at the desk (kind of like a help desk) located at the back door (the only one you can get on) to either buy a one-time ticket or a pass. From there, you need to scan in and scan out each time you get on and off the tram (kind of like the metro).
