🇮🇹 Day trip guide to Udine, Friuli Venezia Giulia

Udine is a midsized city in Friuli Venezia Giulia and makes for a great day trip from Venice! It’s a great place to see classic Friulian architecture & food with some of the best-preserved Venetian design outside Venice! On this guide, you’ll get: - the major sights with notes on what’s worth seeing and if they need advanced booking - an interactive map to help navigate you to each spot - recommendations on typical dishes to order - 7 free sights and spots - 3 museums, including which to prioritize based on time and interest - 3 restaurants (budget-friendly and splurge), 1 cafe, and 1 apertivo bar

Udine isn’t huge, making it easy to wander for a few hours. Its architecture reflects the combination of Friulian, Austro-Hungarian, Napoleonic, and Venetian influences. It was the original capital of this region after the Roman Empire, and the Venetians took over and put their stamp on much of the architecture!

Getting there

It makes a great day trip from Venice, with trains heading back and forth almost hourly. Use the TrenItalia app to see schedules and buy tickets on your phone!

If you'd rather drive, there are plenty of places to park just outside the historic part of town. I recommend looking in the big lots below the castle, or grabbing street parking anywhere if you don't want to walk uphill first thing!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
