Matera is an easy day trip, but I would recommend spending one night here to experience the magic both after dark and in the quiet of the morning.

Churches
Church of Saint Mary of Idris
@victoriaenvacances
Must-see. This church is carved into limestone rock and offers a unique look into the history of Matera. It sits above the Sassi di Matera and offers incredible views of the caves down below. There is a small charge for entry, and in order to preserve the precious cave paintings, photographs are not allowed inside.

Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio

This is a bit of a modern juxtaposition against the cave church, with old relics and ornamental decor. Entry is free.

Cave Home
Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera
@victoriaenvacances
Must-see. While most of Matera has been modernized and the caves repurposed into restaurants and boutique hotels, this home is set up to showcase how its inhabitants lived as recently as the 1950s.

Sassi Caveoso
Sassi di Matera
@victoriaenvacances
The sassi are ancient cave homes that were inhabited as recently as the 1950s when the government began moving people out of the cave homes due to sanitary concerns. Today you'll find revitalised caves-turned-restaurants, boutique hotels, stores, and museums. Walking through the sassi is a must!
