Davvero Italy Guide to...Lucca
Bike Lovers' City & Birthplace of Puccini
Famous for the Renaissance walls that enclose the city and aptly named (for Lucca in Latin means "luminous space" or "sacred grove") this medieval village dating back to Antiquity with the Etruscans who lived there, has a ton of green spaces- some can actually be found on top of the 16th and 17th century ramparts! A tiny Tuscan town packed full of culture, great food AND wine is also a dream come true for cyclists who come from near and far for the reasons cited above - and also for the vast countryside which is literally right outside the historic city center walls.
MY TOP PICKS & PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Where to Sleep:
Higher-End: Grand Universe Lucca (4-Star Hotel) Part of the Autograph Collection - Marriot, this former historic palazzo has been almost perfectly preserved, now boosting a more modern decor along with upscale amenities, lavish rooms, and onsite dining with their Legacy Bistro Wine Bar & Restaurant. Grand Universe is also the only luxury hotel in Lucca city center proper, located in the literal heart of the old town - as in right next to Piazza Napoleone and steps away from the Cathedral.
Mid-Range: La Tosca Rooms (Luxury Rooms & Suites) The grown-up, sophisticated version of the Italian B&B, La Tosca Rooms (named in honor of one of Puccini's most famous operas) is low-key located in a 12th century building. The rooms are simple but tastefully decorated, keeping respect to the original architecture such as the high-beamed ceilings and woodbeams and exposed brick. They also have a large suite apartment perfect for a large group or family and....pets are welcome too!
