Where to Eat Like a Local in Rome
Danielle Cohen
Available for hire
Rome is a great place for history, art, but especially for food! After visiting so many incredible sites and walking so much, you will surely gather up a big appetite, and you are in the perfect place for that! Home to the carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana, and gricia pasta, Roman artichokes, and supplì ‑ you are in good hands if you want to eat. 😋 This guide includes 16 restaurants, 1 gelateria, 1 cafe, and one speakeasy bar (and always updating). These are all delicious and local spots to try in Rome, avoiding the touristy places. I recommend making reservations at these following places ahead of time!

È Passata la Moretta

Hands down one of my favorite local lunch spots in Rome. Try the carbonara, the fried carciofi (carciofi alla giudia), and their special of the day!
We had gnocchi as the special and mamma mia, fantastic!

Trattoria Da Teo
@daniellecohen
A very old school, trattoria in Rome. Delicious carbonara, dessert, and of course - carciofi - to start. We were probably the only "English" speaking people in there.

Flavio al Velavevodetto

Definitely call ahead for a reservation. This place has some of the best carbonara!

Osteria dal 1931
@daniellecohen
This was one of my favorite at home style lunches in Rome. A little outside the center of Rome, but completely worth the trek. You can reach this restaurant by car, taxi, or public bus. Frequented by Anthony Bourdain this little hole‑in‑the‑wall was absolutely to die for.

Il Panzotto

A great hidden gem in the Prati neighborhood. Super sweet workers and service, and delicious food! Their carbonara will rank as one of the best of my life.

Da Bucatino
@daniellecohen
I discovered this place with my best friends in 2018, one late night after our flight, and somehow missed writing down the name of the restaurant. Two years later we came back to Rome and were on a mission to find it again. With some intense investigating on google maps, matching photos of napkins and table settings from TripAdvisor to the photo on my phone, we found it; never to be forgotten again!

Supplì Roma
@daniellecohen
This place is perfect for street food! The supplì are simliar to arancini, as they are fried rice balls, filled with tomato sauce and ground meat, mixed with the rice.

Ristorante la Campana
@daniellecohen
One of the oldest restaurants in Rome and located in the historic center.

Ciao! My name is Danielle and I'm a Californian from San Diego, who's been living full time in Florence, Italy since 2020. I studied in Florence in 2016 and absolutely fell in love with the food, culture, and history, and made it my mission to move back. I moved right before the pandemic, and staying here through all the lockdowns and pandemic life really helped me discover slow travel and find all of Italy's beauty, including lesser known gems, and off the beaten path travel spots.
During my three years in Florence, I have wrote for publications like The Florentine, done freelance marketing with restaurants and a travel agency, giving me high insight into the best destinations, foodie spots, and more.
I am here to help you make the most of your vacation in Italy with curated itineraries for every type of traveler and digital maps to help you enjoy THE BEST food each region has to offer. Let me do the work so you can just relax and enjoy, without any stress! I've had a very unique experience living in Italy the last 4 years, as I made my official move right before the pandemic, after visiting for years. Because of this I learned to travel locally and deeply throughout the numerous incredible destinations in Italy and for that I cater my travel services to finding the most local and mindful experiences, keeping true to discovering and appreciating Italy's culture.
