About Healdsburg

Healdsburg, California is located north of San Francisco between the coast and Napa County. If you're visiting the San Francisco Bay Area, this is an easy weekend trip since it's only about an hour drive away without traffic.

Wine Varietals

With its location near the coast, Healdsburg enjoys the morning fog and dry, warm to hot summers.

Most Common Varietals: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc

You'll also find: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Rosé, Syrah, and Petite Sirah

Trip Logistics

Transportation

You will need a car. Public transit isn't robust and Uber / Lyft is sparse once you are in Healdsburg and wanting to get to different wineries.

Sober Driving

I've used driving services in Sonoma County in the past and they have been worth it. Many can craft the tasting tour for you as well, which takes part of the planning off your plate!

Reservations

Wine tasting rooms in Healdsburg town are more accommodating for walk-ins however winery tastings almost always require reservations.

Dinner reservations are a must, especially during the busier summer months.

Accommodations

Staying central in Healdsburg gives you the option to walk to restaurants, tasting rooms, and morning coffee

If you have a larger group, there are many beautiful Airbnbs in town and out on the vineyards.

I particularly love these:

Itinerary

Remember to save yourself for a full day of wine tasting the next day!

Day Two

The Harmon Guest House breakfast left a lot to be desired last I stayed, so I recommend picking up coffees and breakfast burritos at Black Oak Coffee Roasters

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Megan Medlock | @travel_well.co
When I was growing up I used to rip apart copies of National Geographic and tape photos of the world up on my walls. Daydreaming of sipping a coffee at a Paris cafe, climbing the Giza Pyramids, and experiencing life outside of California, I never thought it would be possible. That all changed in my 30s. I found myself in a career that gave me the financial ability to start traveling and slowly the world opened up. From spending a birthday in Paris surrounded by a handful of friends, to later relocating to Dublin, Ireland for a job that had me off to Singapore and San Francisco frequently, I found a love of trips short and long. Currently located in Ireland, it’s easy for me to pop away for a long weekend to many places and I even had the pleasure of being completely remote in Thailand for a whole month. I hope these guides take some of the perfectionist stress out of planning a precious (but well deserved!) trip of a lifetime. We only get so many days off and my goal is to remove the “checklist” vacation and replace it with one that is nourishing to your soul for whatever it is you need. What you can find here: travel guides focused on balancing rest, relaxation & reflection with seeing the sites and experiencing other cultures and ways of life. What’s the point of getting away from it all when you come back worse off than when you left?
