Discovering Leiria: A Central Portuguese Gem
Welcome to Leiria, a charming city nestled in the heart of Portugal, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Conveniently located just 1 hour and 30 minutes from Lisbon, 1 hour and 45 minutes from Porto, 51 minutes from Coimbra, and a short 30-minute drive from the picturesque coastal town of Nazaré, Leiria is an ideal destination for travelers seeking an authentic Portuguese experience.
Getting There
1. By Car:
Renting a car provides the flexibility to explore Leiria and its surroundings at your own pace. The well-maintained highway network ensures a smooth journey from major cities like Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra. Also, the public transportation in Leiria is not that good, but you can walk to most places described in this post.
2. By Bus:
Buses are a reliable option for those who prefer a comfortable and scenic route. Several reputable bus companies operate regular services to Leiria from major cities, offering a cost-effective and convenient way to reach the city. The bus terminal is right in the city center, so you arrive at a walking distance for most places in this guide.
3. By Train:
While the train is available, I don't recommend it as it is more expensive and time-consuming compared to the other transportation options. However, if you enjoy a leisure journey and want to savour the Portuguese landscapes, this could be a unique experience. Bear in mind there's only direct trains from Coimbra and the train station is a bit far from the city center.
4. Motorhome:
Renting a motorhome can be a fantastic way to explore Alentejo, offering freedom and flexibility. Check out our guide for tips on how to rent a motorhome and explore Europe in comfort:
Exploring Leiria
Once you arrive, Leiria welcomes you with a myriad of attractions and activities. Here are some highlights to make the most of your stay:
1. Leiria Castle:
Built in the 12th century during the Christian Reconquista, the caste played a significant role in protecting the region from Moorish invaders. Over the years, it underwent several modifications, reflecting the architectural styles of different periods, from Moorish to Gothic and Manueline.
In 2021, the requalification works of a large part of the space were completed, which make it more inclusive and open to all citizens, through the construction of two mechanical accesses (on the north and south sides), which are always free to use.
The main keep, known as the "Torre de Menagem," served as the residence for the castle's lords. Climbing to the top of the tower rewards visitors with breathtaking views of the city and beyond. Explore the various towers, each with its own character and historical significance.
On the way to the castle, don't forget to visit Sé Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century and the Museum of Moving Image – m|i|m|o.
One curiosity about Leiria: did you know that the bell tower of the Cathedral is located outside the Cathedral, in the Castle area, so that everyone could hear the call to church?
2. Historic City Center:
Start from the Cathedral and take a stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets of the historic city center, where you'll find charming cafes, local shops, and historical landmarks. The "Rua Direita" is a must-visit, one of Leiria's main street.
Enjoy a leisurely walk along the River Lis promenade, lined with trees and offering a serene escape from bustling city. It's a perfect spot to relas, take in the scenery, and perhaps indulge in a riverside picnic. Both Museu de Leiria and Moinho do Papel are along the riverside.
3. Local Flavors:
Savor the flavors of Portuguese cuisine in Leiria's diverse range of restaurants. From traditional dishes to mouthwatering pastries, the local gastronomy is sure to delight your taste buds.
4. Where to stay:
